“Brown-bag Lunch Parenting Support Group”

ATTENTION: ALL MOMS.

When: 10 Wednesdays, noon to 1:30pm, beginning October 2009;  Bring your lunch.

Who: Mothers looking for camaraderie, support, networking, and for tips and strategies for raising challenging children (e.g., Tourette, OCD, ADHD).

This 10-week FREE pilot program of “Parent Masters” is designed to teach the tools and strategies mothers need to deal with parenting challenges.  The group offers a relaxed atmosphere for moms to unwind, have lunch and coffee, and learn from other moms and professionals about how to master parenting in stressful times with challenging children.

Laura Preskin, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, will facilitate each meeting. Topics will include:

·         Raising a confident child and building self esteem.

·         Interventions for neurological disorders (medication, therapy, and nutrition).

·         Effective parenting styles and strategies for difficult children – setting boundaries, rewards and consequences.

·         Sibling rivalry

·         Behavior modification and effective communication strategies for dealing with inappropriate behavior, whining, yelling, temper tantrums, and aggressive behavior.

·         Stress reduction and maintaining balance in your daily life.

·         Dealing with transitions and life changes for your child.

·         Social skills strengthening (dealing with bullying, friendships, and peer pressure).

·         Advocating successfully for your child at school to get appropriate support.

Laura Preskin, LCSW, works with children, teens and parents.  She offers parent coaching using a  Cognitive Behavior Therapy approach, which is effective for children with Tourette, OCD and ADHD. She also volunteers for the Tourette Syndrome Association NY Hudson Valley Chapter, training school staff on strategies for managing Tourette and other neurological disorders in the classroom.  As the mother of a teenage son with Tourette, she brings her own practical parenting experience to her practice.  She currently works in Scarsdale and White Plains.
